I'm James. I run Clinical Research Insider.

I studied biomedical science and got my first connection to the pharmaceutical industry through a family friend who knew someone at Pfizer — a placement in their quality control team. Not a cold application. A human connection that opened a door.

Since then I've worked across this industry: pharmaceutical quality control, medical research, hospital pathology, biotech — and I'm now in business development at a specialist oncology Contract Research Organisation.

I broke in without a clinical trials background. Everything here is built from that route: what I learned taking it, and what I've seen since about how this industry actually makes its hiring decisions.

Why this exists. Clinical research is genuinely hard to understand from the outside. The roles are opaque, the hiring process is informal, and most of the useful information sits inside the heads of people already working in it. That isn't a conspiracy — it's just how a small, relationship-driven industry works. It does mean that people who'd be good at this never get in, because nobody told them how.

What I won't do. I don't sell certifications, I don't promise jobs, and I don't claim numbers I can't evidence. Where the honest answer is "don't spend money on that," the products say so — the Certification Decision Guide exists mainly to stop people buying credentials they aren't eligible for.
